Werktage vs. Arbeitstage

German law distinguishes two ideas that both translate to "working days". Werktage are all days except Sundays and public holidays — so Saturday is a Werktag, which matters for statutory notice and vacation calculations. Arbeitstage are the days you actually work, usually Monday to Friday. This calculator counts Arbeitstage (Mon–Fri minus public holidays); use the state selector to apply the right holidays.

For this calculator a working day is Monday to Friday that is not a public holiday in the selected federal state. Note the legal distinction: Werktage are all days except Sundays and public holidays (so Saturday counts), while Arbeitstage are the days you actually work — usually Monday to Friday.
Yes. Germany has 9 nationwide public holidays; each of the 16 states adds its own, so the number of working days in a period changes depending on the state you select. This calculator applies the correct holidays for the chosen Bundesland.
No. Saturdays and Sundays are excluded. Public holidays that fall on a weekday are also excluded and shown separately, since they do not reduce working days when they land on a weekend.
They are computed, not looked up. Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday and Corpus Christi are all derived from Easter Sunday for the relevant year, so the result is correct for any date range.
